Summer Tree Care Tips: Keep Your Trees Healthy, Happy & Storm-Ready
As the days get longer and temperatures rise, our trees are soaking up the sun and growing fast—but summer also brings stress, storms, and pests. At Kilmurry Tree Service, we know that a little proactive care can go a long way in keeping your trees strong, beautiful, and safe all season long.
Here are some expert-approved summer tree care tips to help you protect your landscape (and your wallet):
1. Water Wisely
Summer heat can dry out your soil faster than you think. Newly planted trees need deep watering 1–2 times a week, while mature trees benefit from a good soak every 7–10 days—especially during dry spells.
Pro Tip: Skip the quick sprinkle. Aim for deep root watering early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
2. Inspect for Storm Damage (Before the Storm Hits)
Summer storms can take a toll on your trees—especially those with weak branches or hidden decay. Regular inspections can help you spot potential problems before they become major hazards.
Look for:
Cracks or splits in trunks or limbs
Dead or hanging branches
Trees leaning more than usual
If a storm is in the forecast, give us a call to assess risk areas and trim proactively.
3. Prune Smart, Not Hard
While heavy pruning is best in late winter or early spring, light summer pruning is okay for removing dead or broken limbs.
Just don’t overdo it. Over-pruning in hot weather can stress your tree and make it more vulnerable to pests and disease.
4. Watch for Pests & Disease
Summer is prime time for insects like aphids, spider mites, and borers. Keep an eye out for:
Yellowing or curling leaves
Holes in leaves or bark
Unusual sap or sticky residue
If you notice anything odd, give us a call. Early detection = easier (and cheaper) treatment.
5. Mulch Like a Pro
A fresh layer of mulch not only locks in moisture but also protects roots from extreme heat. Just don’t let it touch the trunk—think donut, not volcano.
Use 2–4 inches of mulch and leave a few inches of breathing room around the base of the tree.
